About Red House Consultancy

The Red House Consultancy is a legal services consultancy company operated by Tim Ball. I am a former solicitor with over 30 years of experience in company and commercial legal issues and was, for many years, a partner at the city firm Charles Russell Speechlys.

In 2018, I caught viral myocarditis and suffered three cardiac arrests while recovering! As you can imagine, I was extremely lucky to survive. I was ordered to take two years off for recovery and, accordingly, I left the firm and gave up my practising certificate.

I am now largely recovered (although I still can’t do anything too energetic, so no more running or playing tennis). However, I soon discovered that early retirement was not really for me. I needed to keep occupied! I had no wish to return to a formal law firm, so instead, back in late 2019, I set up The Red House Consultancy and it’s been trading since that date. It is not a formal law firm but a consultancy whereby I use my significant experience to provide advice.

I no longer practice as a solicitor, and I do not hold a practising certificate, operate a client account, or handle any client funds. I, therefore, following the Legal Services Act 2007, do not offer advice on any reserved legal activity such as conveyancing, probate activities or representing you in litigation. I also do not advise on family law issues, debt recovery, commercial or domestic property matters, criminal law and landlord and tenant issues.

However, I do not need to hold a practising certificate to advise on my key areas of expertise, which include the following areas of corporate and commercial law:

  • Smaller Company sales and acquisitions
  • Joint venture and shareholders’ agreements
  • Corporate reorganisations and restructuring
  • Loan agreements
  • All corporate issues, including changes to share capital
  • Drafting commercial contracts or reviewing commercial contracts on your behalf
  • Corporate insolvency issues (I passed the Insolvency Practitioners Association CPI examination with a distinction)
  • Commercial disputes before they result in formal litigation (I cannot advise on the actual litigation process, though, if you decide to take court action)
  • Construction contracts, including collateral warranties
  • Employment contracts
  • Terms and conditions of trade

I have acted on deals worth many billions of pounds during my career and advised on corporate acquisitions and disposals for many very significant companies. I charge £195 per hour plus VAT which is the price that we charged for our trainees at back in 2010, so this represents good value for money for you and it keeps me occupied (if I was still with my old firm my charge out rate would now be £790 per hour plus VAT)!

Finally, many organisations have an employed solicitor on their payroll (known as an ‘in-house counsel’) who acts as a step between initial legal analysis and appointing an external law firm to act. This saves on costs. I can provide a similar service for those smaller businesses that cannot afford to employ a solicitor full-time but also want an option for the provision of basic initial legal services without incurring the expense of going to external solicitors.

I understand that you will want to use a regular law firm for some issues (and I will tell you when you need to and make some recommendations), but if you want my help first, then I am happy to provide it to you. It will save you some money in the long run.
